Carla Uriarte’s journey of discovery took her from San Francisco to Madrid, first formulating her identity as an artist, then expanding her experience in Sydney, and moving to Berlin to grow her career – something she likens to ‘moving to LA to be an actor’. Overwhelmed by life in the German capital, however, she returned to Sydney with a new perspective on cultural differences, belonging and community – themes that continue to inform her work. Now through the friendly Cafe Frida and artist-operated gallery Abstract Thoughts, she is creating a cultural hub in Sydney’s Taylor Square.
