Between assignments across continents, Rio-born photographer Fabio Kotinda relishes spending stints in Bali, surfing and unwinding on the quieter beaches and rice fields.

"Ecstatic Dance at Udara  is normally on Sundays and you don't drink or anything like that. There are DJs playing, and everyone dancing. You don't need to know anybody, I go by myself, and no one is watching you, so you feel free. It's a nice experience as you face your shyness and have fun. You'll end up meeting some nice and creative people."

"Black Sand Brewery. The beer is really good, and you can have IPA, lager, or stout. Then go to the beach, and you have the DJ there. It's a sandbar, so you can go there and buy cocktails and shots. It's really unique."

"A more Western-like suggestion is Milk & Madu. They make really amazing pizza. You can take a friend and get like two pizzas for the price of one."

"For lunch, I'd suggest people go to a warung to try the local food. It's local, but you can see it's really neat and super clean. It's in Berawa, the ambiance is nice, it's good food."

"Coral's Roast, for me, it's the best coffee here. They have a chocolate truffle that comes with the coffee. It's amazing. It's in Pererenan, and the location is beautiful as well."

"A different experience that people probably are not going to speak English is Medewi. It's a nice place to surf. It's unique, it's super quiet, but you feel more like you're exploring the island of Bali."
